Covid-19: Three Large Long Island Districts Reporting Cases Among Staffers As School Reopen

Staff members at three of Long Island’s largest school districts have tested positive for COVID-19.

With classes set to begin in days, an Islip High School teacher, a staff member at St. James Elementary School in Smithtown, and a member of the Merrick Avenue Middle School in Merrick have all been tested and are isolating.

In Islip, contact tracing has already been completed, and all teachers administrators, and employees who were exposed have been tested and all were negative. The building has also been sanitized following the confirmation of a positive COVID-19 case.

The staff member at St. James Elementary School who tested positive hasn’t been in the building since Thursday, Aug. 27, Superintendent Mark Secaur said in a notice to parents in the district.

Bellmore-Merrick Schools Superintendent John DeTommaso said that “as a result of the positive diagnosis, a full investigation, which included contact tracing, was completed by the Nassau County Health Department.

"This investigation determined that only one additional staff member was considered a close contact.”

No other students or staff members were exposed. The staff member will not be permitted back on school grounds for 10 days and confirmation of a negative COVID-19 test.
